Weddington takes it name from the grandson of Reuben Boswell, Reuben B. Weddington. Reuben Boswell lived in Mecklenburg County after the Revolutionary War and donated land that would later become the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church, which is now Weddington Methodist Church.
